Data Science: Legal and Ethical Questions
15/09/2021
“How good is the quality of your data and how good are the conclusions you draw from it?” This is a topic Gijs van Dijck, Professor of Private Law at Maastricht University, dives into in this final podcast hosted by BNR news radio with professors from Maastricht University and the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS). This podcast concludes the series. Here he delves into the legal and ethical issues surrounding data science.
Gijs van Dijck has a legal background and did a lot of empirical research during his PhD specialising in network analysis. Now, Gijs focuses on projects with companies from BISS. Gijs is an expert in the field of legal and ethical issues in the use of data science.
A common misconception is that data ethics, where conscious consideration of how we want data to be handled, prescribes a ‘correct’ way of dealing with data. The idea that we can make rules for the ‘correct’ use of data and provided an organisation applies those rules, they are doing it ‘right’. But, there are also downsides to data ethics and Gijs explains why.
Of course, there are already “off-the-shelf” products; the systems that have already been tested and that you can easily implement. But what’s the problem with this? Do companies know what they are choosing? And what could go wrong? The most important message from Gijs: “The less you know, the more critical you have to be.” Listen to the podcast and find out why a critical attitude is important and how you can better assess this.
