At the heart of many of societies’ greatest challenges lie suboptimal economic decisions. The behavioural changes required to address these societal challenges can be facilitated by adequate corrective policies. The UM Behavioural Insights Centre (UM-BIC) – a research community of more than 40 scholars at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics – therefore employs and develops insights into behavioural regularities to enhance the effectiveness of public policy and company practice, addressing a broad range of societal challenges in the fields of Sustainable Development, Digitalisation and Globalisation.
On 4 November 2021, we hosted an online Tea & Talent session in partnership with UM-BIC and the Behavioural Insights Network Netherlands (BIN-NL) to shed light on recent research in the field of behaviour and behavioural change, focusing on the practical application for managers and (public) policy-makers.
The Tea & Talent session will start with a plenary welcome, followed by three parallel presentations in breakouts and a plenary wrap-up to conclude. Participants can opt for one of three presentations:
by Max Löffler
Measuring the impact of reforms, policies or strategic change trajectories can be quite a challenge. Simply defining a KPI and observing the difference before and after won’t do the job, since there are many simultaneous forces at play that will muddle your measurement. So how can we make sure we have a clean view on the outcomes? Max Löffler presented an evidence-based approach to assess the effectiveness of change and take you through several practical examples evaluating economic policy.
Predicting people’s behaviour and designing policies in a way that ‘nudges’ behaviour in a certain direction can lead to better policy-making and improved management. At the same time, a common concern is that nudges are seen as manipulative; sneaky ways of affecting people’s behaviour without telling them. We talked about whether and how research on nudge interventions can be transformed to professional practice. We also considered the ethics of nudges and the consequence of ethical concerns for their effectiveness.
People do not always decide rationally, but are subject to behavioural biases. However, it could be said that human behaviour is ‘predictably irrational’, which brings with it great opportunities for those who want to improve their decision-making procedures. Edward Huizenga introduced participants to the essentials of behavioural science, provided an example of a survey on predictably irrational behaviour, and sketched ways to learn how behavioural ‘classics’ are used in the business practice field.
